While the backbone of any organization is its membership the future of the organization typically rests with the leadership. In our case the leadership is entrusted to the AAVSO Council.
Members of the AAVSO are eligible to become candidates for the Council and it is important for the survival of our organization that members do step forward to insure our long term survival and viability.
Every year the AAVSO Council has ~4 positions in need of filling. This year we have 4 current council members seeking re-election so the Nominating Committee will therefore be seeking 4 additional candidates so we have a total slate of 8 nominees for the membership to vote on this fall.
Some of the responsibilities of the Council:
While the Director takes care of most of the tasks associated with the day-to-day operations of the AAVSO, Council does have responsibility for assuring that the Director is managing the organization effectively, responsibly, and keeping the AAVSO on-mission. The Council has responsibility for oversight on all budget matters and key personnel, i.e. hiring a Director and to plan for the future of the AAVSO. Council always strives to maintain clear and open lines of communication with the Director, and be receptive to listening to the Director’s suggestions about issues that need consideration.
Council Terms are for 2 years and the AAVSO can pay for travel expenses with most Council meetings occurring just prior to both the Spring and Fall membership meetings.
While we do have a list of potential council candidates under consideration there is room for additional names to be considered.
Again, I would repeat: it is important for the survival of our organization that members do step forward to insure our long term survival and viability.
Therefore, if any one of you would have an interest in becoming a candidate please feel free to email me, Tim Crawford, Nominating Committee Chairperson, (firstname.lastname@example.org) with either your desire to be considered as a candidate or requesting additional information.
Be aware that you must be a member in good standing of the AAVSO to be eligible for nomination to Council.
Later on we will be releasing the names of all the candidates as soon as we have a full slate.
Your 2013 AAVSO Council Nominating Committee,
Tim Crawford, CTX
Jim Jones, JJI
