AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 223 (July 10, 1996)

REQUEST TO MONITOR 1813+49 AM HERCULIS FOR OBSERVATIONS WITH
HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

The interesting magnetic cataclysmic variable AM Her is the subject of an observing
campaign by astronomers at the Universitaetssternwarte Goettingen, Germany (see
AAVSO Alert Notices 218, 220). They will be observing AM Her on July 15, with the
Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and with ground-based telescopes at European Southern
Observatory in Chile, and have requested our assistance in providing simultaneous optical
observations. Your observations are especially crucial, as AM Her has been in its low, or
faint, state, and may be returning to its high, or bright, state (see AAVSO News Flash 35).
The accompanying light curve from the AAVSO International Database shows the recent
behavior of AM Her. 50 observers contributed 837 observations to this light curve; we
acknowledge their contributions with gratitude.

Please monitor AM Her closely and report your observations to AAVSO Headquarters.
AAVSO preliminary 'd' and 'f' cale charts of AM Her were issued with AAVSO Alert
Notice 218.

REQUEST TO MONITOR 1834-23 V348 SAGITTARII FOR OBSERVATIONS WITH
HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

Our assistance has been requested by astronomers at the University of Colorado and
Louisiana State University in monitoring the R CrB variable V348 Sgr before and during
their upcoming observing run with the Hubble Space Telescope on July 15, 1996.

As the accompanying light curve from the AAVSO International Database shows, V348 Sgr
has been very active m recent years, varying from its maximum of approximately
magnitude 11.8 to fainter than 15.7. 21 observers have contributed 252 observations to
this light curve; we acknowledge their contributions with gratitude.

Please monitor V348 Sgr closely and report your observations to AAVSO Headquarters so
we may inform the astronomers of its behavior. Accompanying is an AAVSO preliminary
'f' scale chart of V348 Sgr for your use.

CHARTS AVAILABLE ON AAVSO FTP SITE AND AAVSO WEB SITE HOME PAGE

Chart links are obsolete; 11/2013 create charts using VSP at http://www.aavso.org/vsp

Electronic copies of the AAVSO chart of V348 Sgr and the light curves of AM Her and
V348 Sgr mentioned in this Alert Notice are available from our FTP site:

ftp.aavso.org (198.116.78.2), in /pub/alert223

The charts, along with the light curves of AM Her and V348 Sgr, have also been placed on
our Web site at the following address:

The answering machine at AAVSO Headquarters is on nights and weekends for your
convenience. Please call our charge-free number (800-642-3883) to report your
observations. If you are cut off when you telephone in your observations, please wait a few
minutes and call back to complete your call. We have learned that if someone calls to
leave observations on the answering machine and while they are speaking someone else
calls, the first person may be cut off. We also encourage observers to send observations by
fax to 617-354-0665 or by e-mail through the Internet to observations@aavso.org. We
would appreciate it very much if you would report your observations in Universal Time.

Many thanks for your valuable astronomical contributions and your efforts.

Good observing!

Janet A. Mattei
Director
