AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 289 (September 6, 2001)

1805-30 NOVA SAGITTARII 2001 NO. 3

We have been informed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams
(IAU Circular 7706) that Alfredo Pereira, Cabo da Roca, Portugal, and
William Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile, have independently discovered an
apparent nova in Sagittarius.

Pereira's visual discovery was made on Sep. 5.846 UT at magnitude 7.0,
with strong orange color, during his regular patrol with 14x100
binoculars. Nothing was visible at the location of the nova down to visual
magnitude about 8.5 on Sep. 4.8 UT or down to magnitude about 8.0-8.5 on
Sep. 1.8 or 2.8 UT. Pereira made the following additional observations:
Sep. 5.868 UT, 7.0; 5.880, 6.9; 5.898, 7.0; 5.904, 6.8; 5.928, 6.9.

Liller's photographic discovery was made on two films taken Sep. 3.979 UT,
using Kodak Technical Pan film and an orange filter, that showed the nova
at magnitude 10.0.  His confirming CCD image of Sep. 6.039 UT (taken
through clouds) showed the nova at CCDV (broadband) magnitude 7.27.

A. Hale, Cloudcroft, NM, measured a CCD image taken Sep. 6.1 UT and
reported the position of the nova (estimated by him at visual magnitude
7.0) as:

        R.A. = 18h 11m 46.01s Decl. = -30 degrees 30' 50.9"  (2000)

Liller reported that a low-dispersion CCD prism spectrogram (taken through
clouds) showed a strong continuum and weak H-alpha emission (20% brighter
than the surrounding continuum.

Additional observations submitted to the AAVSO include:  Sep. 6.026 UT,
6.9, D. W. E. Green, Carlisle, MA; 6.0444, 7.3 CCDV, A. Price, Waltham,
MA.

We will be creating a page on N Sgr 01-3 on our website which we will
update every weekday with the observations received.  If you have items
such as images, spectra, etc. you would like to contribute to the page,
please email them to us.

Accompanying is an AAVSO 'b' scale preliminary chart of N Sgr 01-3
prepared by C. Scovil.  Please use this chart to observe the nova, and
report your observations of 1805-30 N SGR 01-3 to AAVSO Headquarters,
making sure to indicate which comparison stars you used.

Congratulations to Alfredo and to Bill on their latest discoveries!
