Alert Notice 446: Supernova 2011‭fe ‬in M101‭ (‬NGC 5457‭) = ‬PSN J14030581+5416254

August 26‭, ‬2011

Discovered by‭:  ‬The Type Ia supernova science working group of the‭ ‬ Palomar Transient Factory‭:  ‬Peter Nugent‭, ‬Lawrence Berkeley National‭ ‬Laboratory‭ (‬LBL‭), ‬University of California at Berkeley‭; ‬Mark‭ ‬Sullivan‭, ‬Oxford University‭; ‬David Bersier‭, ‬Liverpool John Moores‭ ‬University‭ (‬LJMU‭); ‬D‭. ‬A‭. ‬Howell‭, ‬Las Cumbres Observatory Global‭ ‬Telescope Network Inc‭., ‬University of California at Santa Barbara‭; ‬Rollin Thomas‭, ‬LBL‭; ‬Phil James‭, ‬LJMU

(An observation of the supernova by Mathew Marulla and Tavi Grenier, SLOOH Canary Islands Observatory, Mt. Teide, was reported in CBET 2792 as an independent discovery. On re-examination by CBAT director Daniel Green of their submission date versus the date of the posting of the supernova candidate to the Transient Objects Confirmation Page, he reversed his initial interpretation of their observation as an independent discovery.)

Discovery Date‭:  ‬2011‭ ‬Aug‭. ‬24‭ ‬UT

Discovery Magnitude‭:  ‬magnitude 17.2‭ (‬g-band‭, ‬calibrated with‭ ‬respect to the USNO catalog‭)‬

Position
‭:  ‬RA‭ = ‬14:03:05.81‭   ‬Dec‭ = +‬54:16:25.4‭  (‬J2000‭)‬

Spectra‭:  ‬A preliminary spectrum obtained on 2011‭ ‬Aug‭. ‬24‭ ‬UT using FRODOSPEC on the Liverpool Telescope indicates that SN 2011fe ‬is‭ ‬probably a Type Ia supernova at a very early phase‭. ‬Broad absorption‭ ‬lines‭ (‬particularly Ca II IR triplet‭) ‬are visible‭, ‬and an H-alpha‭ feature is not seen‭.‬
