Alert Notice 557: MASTER OT J010603.18-744715.8 = Nova in SMC (Tucana)

October 17, 2016

Event: Nova in the Small Magellanic Cloud (Tucana)

Discovered by: the MASTER-OAFA auto-detection system (reported by V. Shumkov (Lomonosov Moscow State University) et al. in ATel #9621)

Discovery magnitude: 10.9 unfiltered CCD

Discovery date: 2016 October 14.19341 UT

Coordinates (2000.0):  R.A. 01 06 03.27  Dec. -74 47 15.8  (from VSX)

Spectra: Spectroscopy indicating that MASTER OT J010603.18-744715.8 is a classical nova was obtained 2016 Oct 14.70 UT by S. C. Williams (Lancaster Univ.) and M. J. Darnley (Liverpool John Moores Univ.) (ATel #9628) with the FLOYDS instrument on the 2m Faulkes Telescope South (Siding Spring Observatory, NSW, Australia).

N. P. M. Kuin (Univ. College London-Mullard Space Science Lab.) et al. (ATel #9635) report that 500 seconds of observations by Swift centered on 2016 Oct. 15.3056 UT did not detect X-rays.

Observing recommendations: Observations of all types (visual, CCD, DSLR, spectroscopy) and all bands as instrumentation permits are strongly encouraged as the nova evolves.

Notes:
a. Most of the information in this Alert Notice is taken from ATel #9621 (http://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=9621), #9622, #9628, #9631, and #9635.

b. P. Mroz and A. Udalski (Warsaw Univ. Obs.; on behalf of the OGLE team) (ATel #9622) report the progenitor was clearly visible in OGLE images at position end figures 03.27s, 15.8", mean magnitude I = 20.84, and mean color (V-I) = 0.16 mag. They also report the progenitor showed semiregular variability on a timescale of 20-30 days.

c. Shumkov at al. (discovery image, 2016 October 14.19341 UT) give position end figures 03.18s, 15.8".
