Jane Caton Bookkeeper, Contract
I have been the Bookkeeper for the AAVSO since March of 2003 on a contract basis. Our current process is that I come in one day per month to enter monthly transactions and reconcile accounts. I then create a cash flow projection and meet with the Acting Director and Treasurer to make cash mangement decisions for the coming month.
I began my career in health care management, which gradually expanded into independent consulting. In 1989, I opened my own business, focusing on bookkeeping for small businesses and non-profit organizations. I usually set up systems for each new client and then assign one of my employees to handle routine tasks. I think my management background helps me translate financial reports for people who previously considered them a foreign language. Whether it is giving a little non-profit the capacity to manage grants and contracts or helping a roofer figure out he makes more money on repairs than new roofs, I find it tremendously satisfying to help companies grow.
When I first started at AAVSO, Janet Mattei wanted to show me what they actually did. As she showed me the history of one of the stars they track, she said with the most joyful sense of wonder in her voice, "You see, it is really the heartbeat of a star." Since that time, I have come to love the people at AAVSO more every time I see them. Since Janet became ill, I have had more interaction with other people and am endlessly impressed with the level of intelligence, character and loyalty in the organization.
As a small business owner, many of my personal interests have retreated to the land of fantasy. I used to love training young horses to be hunters and show jumpers. I have some great friends who occasionally make all the travel plans and tell me I am going on a scuba diving vacation with them. I love living in the city. I have season tickets to the Symphony and manage to see at least a few ballet and opera performances during the season.
