We are pleased to announce the Second Annual AAVSO Symposium:

Cataclysmic Variables in the 21st Century: Observations from Earth and Space

The symposium was held on Monday, August 8, 2005 at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Thank you to all attendees and participants. We hope you enjoyed the day as much as we did.

If you attended the symposium, please fill out our followup survey!

The original announcement is below.

Location:  Phillips Auditorium, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, Cambridge, MA (map & directions)
Date: August 8, 2005
Time: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
The Symposium will be held from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm on Monday, August 8, 2005 at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This one-day symposium will gather together experts in theory and observation of cataclysmic variables from greater New England's astronomical community to share new results and ideas on these important objects.

Current space-based missions have revealed much about the physics of cataclysmic variables, and powerful ground- and space-based observatories of the near future promise to reveal much more. At the same time, ground-based observations by small telescopes continue to provide important new physical information on these systems, as well as scheduling support and multiwavelength coverage for space-based observations. The collaborative efforts of space- and ground-based observers, and of professional and amateur astronomers, will continue to provide exciting new results in the field of cataclysmic variable research into the next century. This AAVSO symposium is dedicated to fostering those collaborations, generating new connections and new ideas in CV research.

Invited Speakers

Joseph Patterson (Columbia U.; co-founder, Center for Backyard Astrophysics)

"Period Bouncers" -- post-period minimum CVs
    Video of "Period Bouncers" (QuickTime)

    Paula Szkody (U. of Washington)

    Pulsating white dwarfs in CVs

Arne Henden (Director, American Association for Variable Star Observers)

    CVs in quiescence

The purpose of this symposium is to encourage discussion and collaboration. Along with the invited talks, we will hold a round-table discussion on these stars, with observers and theorists sharing ideas on how best to advance the study of these fascinating objects. There will also be a limited amount of room for poster presentations, and time for short poster introductions and viewings. All talks and posters will be invited to be published in the Journal of the AAVSO, which will also feature discussion summaries and a symposium recap.

We hope to see you in Cambridge on August 8, 2005 for this exciting symposium!

Registration

Registration is free and is not required. However, seating is limited, and registered attendees will be given priority. If you wish to present a poster, you must register ahead of time so that we may prepare adequate space. All registered participants will also receive a CD-ROM with sample AAVSO light curves and software, so please register today!
