From the Officers, Councilors, Members, Observers, and Staff of the AAVSO
to
Howard J. Landis
The different ways you have given of yourself and of your time to variable star astronomy and the AAVSO are myriad:
- as variable star observer, you have contributed 1,675 observations to the AAVSO International Database;
- as photoelectric photometrist, you have spent many, many hours in the delicate precision necessary to make accurate observations;
- as Archivist of the AAVSO Photoelectric Photometry Database since its inception, you personally have meticulously compiled, reduced, and archived over 32,500 photoelectric observations submitted by observers worldwide, maintained the machine-readable Database in excellent condition, and kept the many administrative details in the best of order;
- as Chair of the AAVSO Photoelectric Photometry Committee since 1975, you have given 26 years of wise council, enthusiasm, patience, persistence, and continuity (and written well over 100 monthly, semiannual, and annual committee reports!);
- as advisor, helper, and mentor to amateur and professional astronomers alike, you have contributed to the most productive use of observing opportunities and the channeling of research into valuable and rewarding avenues, and you have opened the exciting area of photoelectric photometry variable star observing to many observers worldwide and helped them through its complexities;
- as friend, you have warmed us with your unstinting kindness, cheerfulness, and gentleness.
We recognize your faithfulness and your contributions to variable star astronomy, to the AAVSO, and to our lives with appreciation, gratitude, and love.
