Admin Assistant Opening at AAVSO HQ

When Lauren Rosenbaum came to work with us as the AAVSO HQ Admin Assistant we knew it would be for a limited number of years while she attended graduate school.  Wow, has the time flown by!!!  In her time with us Lauren has become a crucial member of the AAVSO family.  We will be so very sad to see her go, but she will be leaving us to take the next step in her career.  We all wish her the very best!

This bittersweet news means that we have an opening at AAVSO HQ.  Please pass this job posting along to any local candidates.

JOB POSTING:
The American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) is looking for an administrative assistant with immediate availability. The ideal candidate will work well in a team environment, but demonstrate initiative and perseverance. The AAVSO is a small non-profit in the Fresh Pond area of Cambridge, MA serving a membership of amateur astronomers across the world who wish to contribute scientific observations of stars that vary in brightness. We have been in operation in Cambridge for over 100 years. More about our organization can be found at right here on the pages of our website.

Because of the small staff, the administrative assistant will need to be flexible. You will be the receptionist, the shipping department, and the main point of contact via email for the organization. You will assist with member services, processing payments, keeping the website and database up to date, and grant administration. You will also be responsible for a variety of occasional or one-time tasks or projects as assigned by the Director. You may need to create a contract for office cleaning, design the holiday card, or help staff the registration table at our annual meeting. The position requires a high degree of self-direction, but you will certainly never get bored!

Qualifications:
- Excellent Microsoft Office and computer literacy skills, preferably in a Mac environment
- Clear speaking voice and ability to communicate effectively and professionally in person, over the phone, and via email
- Bachelor's degree and office experience preferred
- Superior organizational and task management skills
- Experience working with databases and websites is a plus

We provide a competitive hourly wage and opportunities for improving your job skills. The position is initially part-time (20 hours per week, during business hours of 9 am to 5 pm), but may be expanded into a full-time position for the right person.

Please send a cover letter and resume/C.V. to aavso (at) aavso (dot) org
Review of applications will begin on December 11th and continue until the position is filled.
No phone calls please.
