AAVSO Alert Notice

Alert Notice 588: Long-term CCD monitoring of ER UMa-type variable DDE 48 in Vulpecula

July 21, 2017: The following request for AAVSO assistance has been received from Denis Denisenko (Sternberg Astronomical Institute, Moscow State University) to help characterize "...the cataclysmic variable DDE 48 in Vulpecula. This CV belongs to the rare ER UMa subtype of dwarf novae, with only 6 other stars in VSX being classified as UGER. According to 2016-2017 observations by Nikolay Mishevskiy (MNIC) and Denis Denisenko (DDE), this variable is very active, with superoutbursts to magnitude V=15.4 occurring approximately once a month.

Alert Notice 587: Observations of FI Vir (Ross 128) needed this week

July 17, 2017: Dr. Abel Méndez (University of Puerto Rico at Arecibo) has requested AAVSO assistance in follow-up observations of the flare star FI Vir (Ross 128) subsequent to his radio observations obtained yesterday (July 16) with the Arecibo and Green Bank (GBT) telescopes and the Allen Telescope Array (ATA).

Alert Notice 586: Status of 20 cataclysmic variables needed for WHT campaign

July 7, 2017: Roque Ruiz-Carmona (Ph.D. candidate, Institute of Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands) has requested AAVSO assistance in determining the status of 20 eclipsing cataclysmic variables (CVs) in order to select one system in outburst for observation with the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at La Palma, to detect and study spiral density waves in the system. The WHT observations will begin on 2017 July 11 UT.

Alert Notice 583: Photometry requested for Red Dots campaign

June 16, 2017:  John Strachan (Queen Mary University of London) and Dr. Guillem Anglada-Escude (Queen Mary University of London) have requested AAVSO assistance in the monitoring of three M dwarf stars as part of the Red Dots campaign.

Alert Notice 582: Nova Oph 2017 photometry requested for Swift TOO observations

June 15, 2017: Drs. Frederick Walter (Stony Brook University) and Paul Kuin (University College London) and colleagues have requested AAVSO observers' assistance in obtaining photometry of Nova Oph 2017 (TCP J17394608-2457555) in support of Target-of-Opportunity observations with Swift UVOT that have been triggered and are scheduled for the next ten days (2017 June 16 - 25), and possibly longer.

Alert Notice 581: Monitoring HD 148703 during upcoming eclipses

June 8, 2017:  Dr. Milena Ratajczak (University of Wrocław) has requested AAVSO observers' assistance in monitoring the very bright (V = 4.23) and very unusual eclipsing binary HD 148703 (HR 6143, N Sco) during its infrequent primary and secondary eclipses scheduled for 2017 June 11 and June 14, respectively.
