This is a friendly abstract deadline reminder for the joint AAVSO/AAS meeting being held in Boston this May:

20 Million Observations

On Feburary 19, 2011 the number of observations in the AAVSO International Database surpassed the 20 million mark. It is fitting that this milestone was achieved during our 100th anniversary. Below is some information about the achievement.

100th Spring Meeting of the AAVSO

A milestone anniversary and a joint meeting with the AAS!

May 21-26, 2011
Boston, MA

An archive for this meeting will be available on the AAS web site shortly.

Trivia Leaderboards Added

We've created leaderboards for the Centennial Trivia Challenge! Check them out to see how people are doing. Don't forget to answer today's question, either!

AAVSO Trivia Contest

AAVSO Trivia Contest

Test your knowledge of the AAVSO! Every day we'll post a new trivia question to the website.

We have over 100 trivia questions, with topics covering the AAVSO, its history and its members. We'll rotate the question every day of 2011--come back every day and see if you can answer all of them! When we run out of questions, we'll start over from the beginning, so if you miss a question, it'll be back around in a few months.

Star Parties and Astronomical Events in 2011

We are planning an all out blitz on star parties and astronomy functions for our centennial year. We are sending speakers from the staff to give talks at Stellafane, ALCon 2011, Texas Star Party, Nebraska Star Party, Table Mountain Star Party and NEAIC, the Northeast Astro Imaging Conference. We are also in discussions to send representatives to the Black Forest and Connecticut star parties.

Centennial Observer Challenges

October 31 Update: Here is a list of those who have already surpassed the 2011-in-2011 challenge goal.

October 24 Update: The first certificates will be mailed out in early November. However, keep on observing as we'll continue to mail the certificates until the end of the challenge on December 31.

Celebrating 100 Years

One Hundred Years of Variable Star Observing & Science

As amazing as it might seem, 2011 is the 100th anniversary of the American Association of Variable Star Observers. That's a century of citizen scientists working together to advance science, whether it be by supporting the research of professional astronomers or each other.
