AAVSO CCD School

The AAVSO will be holding a week-long "CCD School" from July 30 through August 3, 2012.  The school will take place at Tufts University, located a couple of miles from AAVSO HQ.  The school is designed for those who have some experience with a CCD system, and who want to learn how to take professional-quality data.

Magnitudes: Measuring the Brightness of Stars

On our website, you'll find frequent reference to the term "magnitude" -- this is a unit of measurement of how bright a star looks to us in the sky.  But what does it mean?

The following explanation of what the magnitude measurement scale is and how it was invented is taken from the AAVSO's education project Variable Star Astronomy, Chapter 2:
