May 24, 2016: Roque Ruiz-Carmona (Ph.D. candidate, Institute of Mathematics, Astrophysics and Particle Physics, Radboud University Nijmegen, The Netherlands) has requested AAVSO assistance with his campaign to observe a set of 20 cataclysmic variables (CVs) with the William Herschel Telescope (WHT) at La Palma TONIGHT.
Thanks to a lot of hard work by Ariel Majcher, Bogdan Kubiak, Marcin Biskupski, Michał Kwieciak, and Piotr Guzik, the AAVSO Manual for Visual Observing of Variable Stars (2013 edition) is now available in Polish. You may download this Manual (free-of-charge) from here.
We live in exciting, unpredictable times. The boundaries of our knowledge are expanding at an accelerating rate, just like the universe we live in. It is impossible to know what the world will look like even five years from now.
AAVSO Newsletter 68, April 2016 is now available to members
The AAVSO Newsletter is a periodic, general forum that supports our various observing programs with lists of new targets, observing programming ideas, and general information that spans a wide area of interest. Guest writers contribute pieces that can range from current events to book reviews.
This year's spring meeting will begin on Thursday evening, May 5, at 6pm CDT (23:00 UT), with a keynote address by Dr. Horace Smith, Professor Emeritus of Michigan State University and a noted expert on RR Lyrae stars. Dr.
April 8, 2016: The symbiotic recurrent nova T CrB has entered a super-active state, and it is brighter and bluer than it has been since before its last outburst in 1946. Multicolor and visual ongoing observations are requested.
April 8, 2016:Further to AAVSO Alert Notice 532, the AAVSO is requesting ongoing time-series observations of the enigmatic variable object KIC 08462852 (= KIC 8462852) beginning immediately and continuing through at least the end of 2016.
Details on KIC 08462852 (V=11.88) were given in Alert Notice 532.
Observations are requested in order to study not only the aperiodic fading events but also the behavior of the star outside of these events.
