Alert Notice 358: Monitoring of Mira (omi Cet) in support of HST Observations

September 17, 2007: Dr. Margarita Karovska (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics) and
collaborators are performing a comprehensive study of the Mira AB interacting system, using the WFPC2 camera on the Hubble Space Telescope. Mira AB is composed of the prototype Mira variable omi Cet and its companion VZ Cet, separated by about 0.5 arcsecond. As part of this project they plan to obtain a large number of high-angular resolution images at wavelengths ranging from UV to optical.  The main objectives of the HST/WFPC2 observations are:

Bulletin 76 for 2013 published and available online

AAVSO Bulletin 76 - Predicted Dates of Maxima and Minima of Long Period Variables for 2013 - has been published and is available from the AAVSO Bulletin page.

AAVSO Bulletin 76 gives predicted dates for 381 Mira and semiregular variables for the period January 2013 through February 2014. These dates are based on observations in the AAVSO International Database.

AAVSO Bulletin 76 - Stars with Double Maxima

In AAVSO Bulletin 76 there are three stars that exhibit double maxima:  V Boo, R Cen, and R Nor. These stars therefore have primary and secondary maxima and minima. They are not included in the main Bulletin table. Their predicted dates of maximum and minimum for January 2013 through February 2014 are presented here in list form (JD and Gregorian calendar dates) and in approximation of the main Bulletin table format.

AAVSO Bulletin 76 - Predicted Dates of Maxima and Minima of Long Period Variables for 2013 - is published in the new format that was introduced in 2011. The information that was included in earlier numbers of the Bulletin is included in this new format, along with more information. The Bulletin does not include stars that do not have an AAVSO mean curve.

Mira Variables with Period Changes

Mira variables are the longest-observed class of stars for which we have long-term quantitative data that allow us to study their behavior over centuries-long periods of time.  Fortunately for us, they're also easy to observe and monitor, having some of the largest amplitudes of all variables, and hundreds of them are bright enough that they're within reach of astronomers with modest telescopes.
