Artist Searching for Variable Star Magnitudes for Project

Mon, 08/01/2016 - 21:35

Hello,

I would like to make a visual work using the magnitudes of a variable star. I first had the idea when reading the recent AR Sco article and am attracted to its rapid and strong fluctuation (every two minutes). Unfortunately, the longest set of observations is in the low hundreds and I was hoping for something over a longer period (several days or weeks). Does anyone know of a similar variable star that might also have a longer data set? Thank you!

Zach,

This specific star is the only one of it's type ( R+*) in the AAVSO VS data base; there are however a number of R type stars:

From the VSX data base

*

Unique variable stars outside the range of the classifications. These probably represent either short stages of transition from one variability type to another or the earliest and latest evolutionary stages of these types, or they are insufficiently studied members of future new types of variables.

R

Close binary systems characterized by the presence of strong reflection (re-radiation) of the light of the hot star illuminating the surface of the cooler companion. Light curves are sinusoidal with the period equal to Porb, maximum brightness coinciding with the passage of the hot star in front of the companion. The eclipse may be absent. The range of light variation may reach 1 mag. in V.
Example: KV Vel.

The AAVSO Light Curve Generator shows a number of observatons from the 8/05/2014 to 9/23/2014 period of time and I would suggest that you enter those dates (or a lesser period) into the light curve generator for AR Sco:

If you can be more specific about what you are seaching for I can possibly suggest some alternatives if you are still short of your objective... please contact me off of this forum.  tcarchcape@yahoo.com

AR Sco data

As one of the authors of the AR Sco Nature article, I have now uploaded my data to the AAVSO database. I am pretty sure you will find now what you are searching for.

More data on the upload

Hi,

I am actually uploading more data on AR Sco. And will so the coming hours and day or so.
