Variable Star Activities for Education and Outreach: An Annotated List
- Chandra-AAVSO Variable Star Activities:
- Faulkes Telescope Education and Science
This website lists activities and projects that can be done with remote
observing telescope images of asteroids, comets, galaxies and stars.
Attempts have been made to include all the guidance and assistance for
conducting astronomy research.
Instructions on image processing using astrometry software, Astrometrica,
are given with the asteroid projects.
- MOST: Microvariability and Oscillations of STars
Canada's "Humble Space
Telescope", the size of a suitcase, successfully studying variable stars
with ultra-high photometric precision. Some data is now publicly available.
- Percy, J.R., "Variable Stars for Student Research".
A website for senior
high school students and undergraduates who wish to do research projects
on variable stars. Includes links to data and software, including a
simple time-series method called "self-correlation analysis".
- Percy, J.R. and Musser, G. 1995, "The Stars They Are A'Changin'".
Activities
which are part of a teachers' resource guide on "Star Science in the Autumn
Sky"; includes an activity in which the brightness of Delta Cephei is
monitored.
- Period04
The home page for the Fourier and least-squares time-series analysis
package which can be used by undergraduates and advanced high school
students.
