AAVSO Funds
The following is a list of the specific funds to which you may contribute. If you do not wish to specify how you would like your donation to be used, the AAVSO will determine the fund where it is needed most and place it there.

Endowment Fund

The corpus of these funds are permanently restricted, income, capital gains and losses (realized and unrealized) are considered unrestricted income usable toward the operation of the organization. 

Ford Fund and Other Unrestricted Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Ford Fund and Other Unrestricted Fund are considered unrestricted for the purpose to provide support for the essential and important day-to day-functions, and programs of the AAVSO. 

Janet A. Mattei Research Fellowship Fund

The Janet A. Mattei Fellowship Fund is comprised of both board-designated and donor-restricted contributions made in memoriam of Janet A. Mattei, former director of the Association.  The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Mattei Fellowship are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding the research of a visiting fellow at the Association’s headquarters for a limited time. 

Margaret Mayall Assistantship Fund

The Mayall Fund was established in 1974, in honor of the Association’s former director, Margaret W. Mayall.  The purpose of the fund is to pay for or defray expenses incurred by hiring of research assistants.  The corpus of the Fund is permanently restricted, while the portion of the investment income attributable to the Mayall Assistantship Fund is temporarily restricted to support payments for salaries of “Mayall assistants”. 

Building Fund

This fund is dedicated to replenishing the Investment Fund for the cost of purchasing the headquarters building (49 Bay State Road, Cambridge, MA 02138).  The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Building Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding refurbishment of the building, and to cover other costs incurred with the purchase and ongoing maintenance. 

Solar Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Solar Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding staff costs of administering the section and publishing the Solar Bulletin, and to offset travel expenses for visiting solar researchers. 

AAVSOnet Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the AAVSOnet Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding the establishment, refurbishment and maintenance of telescopes, cameras, mounts, enclosures, computers, software, and hardware required to operate the robotic telescope network. 

Member Sponsorship Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Membership Sponsorship Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding the membership dues for those active variable star observers who want to become members of the Association but cannot afford the dues. 

Student Meeting Scholarship Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Student Meeting Sponsorship Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding meeting registrations for up to 10 students per annual meeting of the AAVSO. 

JAAVSO Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the JAAVSO Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding for costs associated with producing the JAAVSO (AAVSO Journal).

Visiting Astronomer Travel Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Visiting Astronomer Travel Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding Donations to pay visiting Astronomer’s travel to AAVSO HQ to perform Research and Collaboration.

VPHOT Maintenance and Upgrade Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the VPHOT Maintenance and Upgrade Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding maintenance, upgrades, storage, and operation of VPHOT, the AAVSO primary Photometry Tool. 

Contributor-Specified Restricted Funds

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Contributor-Specified Restricted Funds are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose as specified by the donor thereof. All such restricted funds of the Association shall be administered in strict accordance with the instructions of the donor. The Association is not obliged to accept any assets so offered. 

Director’s Discretionary Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Director’s Discretionary Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the unrestricted use by the Director for the benefit of the Organization. 

Annual Campaign Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Annual Campaign Fund are considered unrestricted for the purpose to provide additional support for the essential and important day-to day-functions, tools, and programs of the AAVSO, including but not limited to website maintenance, member services, observer support, CHOICE course development, AAVSO publications, and online tools (Chart plotter, Light Curve Generator, VPHOT, VStar, WebObs, etc.).  The proceeds of this fund go into the broader category called General Fund in the ByLaws, and are considered Unrestricted for Financial Reporting Purposes.
