Net Funds with Donor Restrictions

Janet A. Mattei Research Fellowship Fund

The Janet A. Mattei Fellowship Fund is comprised of both board-designated and donor-restricted contributions made in memoriam of Janet A. Mattei, former director of the Association.  The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Mattei Fellowship are considered restricted for the purpose of funding the research of a visiting fellow at the Association’s headquarters for a limited time.

Margaret Mayall Assistantship Fund

The Mayall Fund was established in 1974, in honor of the Association’s former director, Margaret W. Mayall.  The purpose of the fund is to pay for or defray expenses incurred by hiring of research assistants.  The corpus of the Fund is restricted, while the portion of the investment income attributable to the Mayall Assistantship Fund is supporting payments for salaries of “Mayall assistants”. The fund can also be used for the purpose of paying visiting Astronomer’s travel to AAVSO HQ to perform Research and Collaboration.

AAVSOnet Fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the AAVSOnet Fund are considered temporarily restricted for the purpose of funding the establishment, refurbishment and maintenance of telescopes, cameras, mounts, enclosures, computers, software, and hardware required to operate the robotic telescope network.

Sponsorship fund

The corpus, contributions, and income derived from the investments allocated to the Sponsorship Fund aim funding the membership dues for those active variable star observers who want to become members of the Association but cannot afford the dues, or meeting registrations for up to 10 students per annual meeting of the AAVSO.

Policy on overhead: The AAVSO is implementing a 10% overhead rate on contributed Net Funds with Donor Restrictions aimed at covering expenses related to administrative support and management activities. When appropriate this overhead rate can be increased or decreased at the discretion of the Director.
