Research articles

Review papers (up to 10,000 words)

Articles containing reviews and summaries of astronomical information as well as new research (by invitation only).

Variable Star Research (up to 6,000 words)

Articles on any topic of variable star astronomy, broadly including non-stellar variables such as AGN, gamma-ray bursts, and variable nebulae.  Examples include: new observations, analyses of existing data, theoretical and/or computational variable star modeling.

Instruments, Methods, and Techniques (up to 6,000 words)

A broad category including: Photometric and observing techniques; Charts and Sequences; Data analysis techniques (statistical or computational methods); Instrumentation and equipment; Surveys and data mining.

Education and outreach (up to 6,000 words)

Articles on formal education studies, education and outreach projects, surveys, and student mentoring.

Solar Astronomy (up to 6,000 words)

Articles pertaining to Solar data analysis, commentary, history of solar observing, sunspot counts, and sudden ionospheric disturbances.

Variable Star Data (up to 6,000 words)

Articles composed primarily of variable star data, either observations or data products such as times-of-maxima or minima.

History and biography (up to 10,000 words)

Scholarly, researched articles on topics in the history of variable star astronomy.

Dissertation Summaries (up to 1,000 words)

Summaries of recent, successfully defended Masters' Theses and Doctoral Dissertations in related fields.

Editorial Content

Book Reviews (up to 2,000 words)

Discussion of recently published books on variable star astronomy and history, and sometimes on topics of interest in general astronomy.

Letters to the Editor (up to 2,000 words)

Commentary, responses, and reports on research published in JAAVSO and elsewhere.

Editorial

Introductions, commentary, announcements, etc. written or invited by the JAAVSO Editor.
