VSOTS: UV Ceti and the Flare Stars - Our galaxy is filled with billions of red dwarf stars. Lying at the faint, red end of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram, their small masses make them much cooler and dimmer than our own Sun. However, some of these stars belong to the spectacular class of variables known as the flare stars or UV Ceti variables. Read more about UV Ceti and the other flare stars in this month's Variable Star of the Season. Dr. John M. Grunsfeld is new NASA Chief Scientist - Veteran astronaut, astronomer, and astrophysicist Dr. John Grunsfeld will succeed Shannon Lucid as NASA Chief Scientist. The AAVSO was honored to have Dr. Grunsfeld as a guest speaker at the 89th Spring Meeting and High-Energy Astrophysics (HEA) Workshop for Amateur Astronomers in Huntsville, AL in April, 2000. Dr. Grunsfeld spoke about the 1999 servicing mission of the Hubble Space Telescope and high-energy astrophysics. This was the first AAVSO/NASA HEA workshop for amateur astronomers and was the beginning of the AAVSO's remarkable High-Energy Astrophysics program.

An Amateur Discovery in a Professional Field - Berto Monard, an AAVSO member & observer is the first amateur to discover the afterglow to a GRB, which usually last only a few hours. While many afterglows have been imaged by amateurs, including the famous GRB030329, this is the first time an afterglow was discovered and published by an amateur. The AAVSO International High Energy Network is dedicated to observing GRB afterglows, as well as other objects associated with high energy phenomenon.
