- New AAVSO Director, Arne Henden - We are delighted to announce the appointment of Dr. Arne Henden as AAVSO Director, effective March 1, 2005. Henden is Senior Research Scientist for the Universities Space Research Association at the U.S. Naval Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona. His primary research interests are in optical and near infrared imaging, variable stars, gamma ray burst afterglows and professional-amateur collaboration. "With his extensive experience working with amateurs and his professional reputation as one of the world's premier photometrists, Henden is a perfect fit as the new leader of the AAVSO," said Bill Dillon, President of the AAVSO.

- Var Her 04: An Interactive Experience -
Var Her 04, a rare type of cataclysmic variable, continues to be a source of much interest for some AAVSO staff members. After a long observing run last year, a paper was written and conclusions were made. Then new information was obtained that changed those results. Upon further analysis, however, those conclusions were contradicted and new conclusions were made! You won't need a roller coaster when studying Var Her 04-- it is provided for you. Read on to learn the tale of this CV and how you can help us better understand this challenging system.

- First Janet Mattei Fellow: Grant Foster - This summer, Grant Foster has been working at AAVSO Headquarters as the first Janet
A. Mattei Research Fellow. He has spent most of his time unraveling
mysteries in the AAVSO database. One project he has worked on includes
decades of visual observations of cepheid variables. Another, includes
data taken from recent CCD campaigns of cataclysmic variables. Foster's
work is an example of the rich diversity of the AAVSO database. Find out more
about the role of the Mattei Fellow and the work
Grant Foster is doing.

- Gamze's Trip to Istanbul - Gamze Menali, AAVSO astronomical technical assistant, travelled to her native Istanbul, Turkey to represent the AAVSO in a Turkish Amateur Astronomy Symposium held in honor of the late Janet Mattei, former AAVSO Director. Gamze's talk was well received and there were fruitful discussions about the possible contributions of Turkish amateurs. Gamze also met with Janet's friends and family, spent time with David and Wendee Levy, and generally enjoyed being in Istanbul. Read this colorful account of her trip! Pictured here are Gamze Menali (back), David and Wendee Levy, and Kadem Şenkal (Janet's sister) enjoying a luncheon hosted by Janet's friends from Izmir.

- The Volunteers Who Make it Work - The volunteers of the AAVSO are extraordinary people.
Some of them work late into the night to check star charts, or review articles for the JAAVSO, create amazing software, stuff envelopes, lead observing programs, the list goes on. And how much do they get paid? Nothing! All we can do is thank them and recognize their hard work, so thank you to ALL of the volunteers of the AAVSO. You are doing an incredible job and we could not continue to be a world class organization without
all of your hard work. Read on to learn about the current work of some of our outstanding volunteers and what they are doing to help the variable star community.
