Chat with Dr. Andrej Prsa

Dr. Andrej Prsa is the author of PHOEBE (PHysics Of Eclipsing BinariEs), a software package that enables users to model eclipsing binaries. Andrej is currently doing post-doctoral work at Villanova University, and continuing to develop PHOEBE. Chat with him online on June 7 at 2100 EDT.

Modeling Eclipsing Binaries with PHOEBE for Fun and Profit*

Picture this scenario. You have been bitten by the astronomy bug. You have spent countless evenings watching the heavens, observing various and sundry stars. Maybe, just maybe, some of those stars were eclipsing binaries. What can you do with all those observations? Perhaps you have submitted them to the AAVSO (bravo!). You might even have acquired software that would enable you to analyze the data and determine periods and amplitudes of variability. But still you wonder: "Is there anything more that I could do with this data?". If such a thought has ever crossed your mind, if you are interested in eclipsing binaries, or even if you just have nothing better to do that day, join us on June 7 at 2100 EDT for a chat with Andrej Prsa, the author of PHOEBE . We will be discussing eclipsing binaries, modeling EBs using PHOEBE, as well as taking questions from the chatroom.

1. Select an eclipsing binary
2. Observe said star
3. Model the system using Phoebe
4. ?????
5. PROFIT!
