Data Validation Project
UPDATE: The Validation Project has been completed! A paper will be published in the JAAVSO describing the project in its entirety.
The Data Validation Project is an exciting new project underway at the AAVSO. Funded by a grant through NASA, the
Data Validation Team, consisting of 8 AAVSO staff members, is presently going through a total of about 9.5 million
observations for about 5000 variable stars collected by the AAVSO from 1911 through 2001. By the fall of 2004, all of
the data will be checked and cleaned for name, designation, Julian Date, magnitude, and observer initial problems
by reviewing original observation reports. In addition, the data will undergo an intense quality control check by
experienced AAVSO staff members, whereby each individual light curve for a given star will be viewed and
assessed. Once the data have gone through this procedure, they are deemed "validated" and are ready to be
released to the public via electronic access. Look for our first batch of Validated Data containing hundreds of
stars to be released soon!
