				AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 225 (July 31,1996)

0241-08 SUPERNOVA 1996an IN NGC 1084

We have been informed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (IAU Circular 6442) that S. 
Nakano, Sumoto, Japan, reports the CCD discovery of a supernova in NGC 1084 on July 27.772 UT at 
magnitude 14 by Masakatsu Aoki, Tsukioka-Cho, Toyama, Japan.

SN 1084 is 15" east and 22" north of the center of NGC 1084. The supernova's 2000 position, measured 
by Y. Kushida, Yatsugatake South Base Observatory, is (IAU Circular 6442):

R.A. = 02h 46m 00.83s	Decl. = -07d 34' 20.3"

Inspection by S. Benetti, M. Turatto, and G. van de Steene, European Southern Observatory (ESO), of a 
fully-reduced CCD spectrum taken July 30.41 UT with the ESO 1.5-m telescope at La Silla, Chile, 
confirms the object as a type-II supernova approximately two months after explosion (IAU Circular 6442).

Accompanying is a chart from the AAVSO Variable Star Atlas showing the location of NGC 1084, and a 
chart of the galaxy and the supernova from the Deep Space CCD Atlas: South by Vickers and Wassilieff. 
Magnitudes on this chart are taken from the Guide Star Catalog, using The Sky software. Please monitor 
SN 1084 and report your observations to AAVSO Headquarters.

0207-63 WX HYDRI TO BE OBSERVED WITH HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

Astronomers at the Space Telescope Science Institute are planning to observe the SU UMa-type 
cataclysmic variable WX Hyi with the Hubble Space Telescope m August, September, and November. 
They have requested our assistance in monitoring its behavior throughout this period.

Our southern hemisphere observers, in particular, are asked please to monitor WX Hyi closely from now 
through the end of the year, and to keep us informed of its behavior, so we may alert the astronomers 
accordingly. If you do not have the charts for this far-southern object, please let us know.
