THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF VARIABLE STAR OBSERVERS 25 Birch Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 USA BITNET: aavso@cfaS SPAN: nssdca::cfa8::aavso Tel. 617-354-0484 FAX 617-354-0665 AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 145 (June 3, 1991) REQUEST TO MONITOR DWARF NOVAE FOR IUE OBSERVING RUNS Our assistance has been requested by astronomers in England who have been granted observing time with the IUE to monitor dwarf novae in outburst. The scheduled observing times are June 7-9, and June 26-28, 1991. We have been asked to alert the astronomers to the onset of outbursts of dwarf novae so that they may observe them with the IUE as soon as possible. Please call in your observations of any active dwarf novae by June 6, so we may update the astronomers before their run starting on June 7. Continue to call in on June 7, 8, and 9. Please follow the same procedure for the second run: call in by June 25, then on June 26, 27, and 28. REQUEST TO MONITOR HIGH-GALACTIC LATITUDE CATACLYSMIC VARIABLES FOR IUE OBSERVING RUN We have been asked to assist astronomers at the Planetary Science Institute in Arizona with their ongoing (i.e., there is no cut-off date) IUE observations of high-galactic latitude cataclysmic variables in outburst. They are interested in monitoring the outbursts with IUE and in arranging simultaneous ground-based photometric and spectroscopic observations. The stars they are interested in are listed below. You will notice that all of the target stars have long outburst interval times, and that their outbursts are unusual. Please monitor these stars closely, and call in to Headquarters your observations of any you see go into outburst. Desig. Name Max-Min Desig. Please submit your telephone charges to Headquarters for reimbursement. Your close monitoring of cataclysmic variables as requested above and reporting any activity is crucial to the success of these observing runs. I thank you very much for your efforts and for your valuable astronomical contributions. Good observing! Janet A. Mattei Director
