Constellation Finder Charts

Tip: If you are just starting out and you're not quite sure where to begin, you may want to visit our "Stars Easy to Observe" section. Here you will find a list of stars that are recommended for beginners, as well as for those interested in expanding an observing program.

Constellation finder charts present wide-field plots that encompass an entire constellation with the location of bright stars and selected variables charted. Originally produced for the Hands-On Astrophysics educational project, these charts may also be of use to the beginner trying to find their way around the sky.

All of our constellation finder charts are available for download here:

The constellation finder charts are available in directory format only and cannot be printed at this time using the chart reduction utility. Please refer to the section below for alternate printing instructions.

Printing a Finder Chart

  1. Save the GIF chart to your computer by choosing the "save as" feature in the file menu of your web browser.
  2. Open the image using an image viewer or art program.
  3. The charts should be printed at 300 dpi, but with some programs, this is not always a straightforward option. If all else fails, check to see if your program has a "fit to page" option within the page setup menu.
  4. The chart should now print on a single page.
