designation problem. See AAVSO Discussion Group for more info.

    Comments:
Question about 1900 coordinates: Does anyone use them? We are
contemplating removing them from future charts. Please e-mail me if you
*do* use the 1900 coordinates on the charts. Thanks.

    New charts:
DF CYG - DR, ER, FR scales
    XZ DEL - FR

  • Sep 19, 2002:

The online chart search engine now lets you print charts from within your web browser. Also, the range data for all AAVSO Bulletin stars has been updated in the chart database (united.txt) to display AAVSO visual mags instead of GCVS mags (which can be photographic or filtered). This means the ranges seen in the chart search results are closer to what you will see visually.

  • Sep 16, 2002:

A C scale chart for recently discovered nova V4742 SGR (formerly N SGR 02#2) has been issued. D and E charts will be available in the future.

Also, the nova has been marked on the B-scale chart for V4157 SGR so you can use it to find the nova if you wish. However, please use the sequence on the dedicated N SGR 02 #2 chart to make the estimate.

  • Sep 13, 2002:

    Optional Upgrades

EL LYR D, DR, E, and ER charts have been updated using photometric data from Ron Zissell. The existing sequence has not changed so you do NOT need to update your chart if you are happy with your current chart. A few comp stars have been added to fill out the sequence.

    Cosmetic Changes

DG PEG D, DR, E, and ER-scale charts have been updated with revised 2000 coordinates. Thanks to Mike Simonsen for reporting this.

Z LYR F and FR-scale charts have had the label of the variable on the field corrected (used to say "S" instead of "Z"). Thanks to Mike Simonsen again for reporting this.

  • August 22, 2002:

The AAVSO has recently published the following REVISED and UPDATED charts. These are charts that replace previously existing charts issued by the AAVSO.

** It is very important that you upgrade to these charts. **

** It is also important that you list in your reports the issue date of the chart used. This is essential so we can transform the observations made with the old chart to those made with the new one.**

Observations made with the older charts should not be combined with data from these new charts without proper transformation. If you are observing one of these stars, please stop using your current chart and begin to use these. We believe you will find these charts easier to use and the comparison sequences much improved.

Please send any feedback and comments to charts@aavso.org. Thanks and good observing!

  • August 20, 2002:

77 new charts for Photoelectric Photometry programs have been posted to the AAVSO WWW and FTP sites. These charts are denoted using a new "P" scale format. This new format covers about 6 square degrees and includes a comparison and check star. Visual observers can also use the charts as visual comparison stars are also labelled. These charts will be included in the next AAVSO Variable Star Chart CDROM published this October.

All these charts are available via the AAVSO FTP site (ftp://ftp.aavso.org/charts/) and via the online chart search engine at /observing/charts/ .

PEP observers please note that although these charts may be downloaded, they are not to go into use until January 1, 2003.

  • August 2, 2002:

The d-scale chart file for Z Del issued on the 1st CDROM and available on the AAVSO Web site was corrupted making it unreadable. It has been rescanned and placed online. Thanks to Bob Stine for notifying us of the problem. http://www.aavso.org/charts/catalog/DEL/Z_DEL/ZDEL-D.GIF

The 1999 B, BR, D, DR, E, and ER-scale charts for FO AQL misidentified FP AQL, which is also in the field. This has been corrected and new charts published to the web/FTP site with the correct identification of FP AQL. Thanks to John Sanford for his help on this chart.

The 1937 R CVN A-scale chart (revised 1986) has been modified to remove some known variables as comparison stars and to label newly identified variables. CP BOO, BW BOO, SW BOO, and NSV 20079 were added to the chart. If you observe R CVN is it vital that you use this chart instead of the old one.
