About the Gremlins

These images were taken from a paper by John J. Ruiz (RZ) presented at the 40th Annual Meeting of the AAVSO on October 13, 1951. An article based on the paper was published in 1951 in the "Gleanings for ATM's" column edited by Earle B. Brown for Sky & Telescope magazine.

Note how many of the issues photometrists faced in the early 1950's are the same ones we still face in the 21st century. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Captions were taken from the Sky & Telescope article:

Gremlins that bring extraneous light into the optical system must be eliminated.

The free passage of light through the small aperture before the phototube surface can be seriously impaired by dirt and dust.

The gremlin can't shake the sturdy mounting of Mr. Ruiz' telescope.

A wasted night's work.

The verticle scale is magnitude difference, 12 Lacertae minus 10 Lacertae, plotted without a correction for differential extinction. No filter was used.
