Sunspots

Gema Araujo caught wonderful images of AR0969 on August 24, 2007, a few minutes before (left) and an hour after (right) a class C2.0 flare erupted and recorded by several SID observers. Click here to see more of Gema's nearly daily images.

August must have produced many clear days as sunspot observers added nearly 200 more observations this month than July. Hopefully the clear weather trend will continue into September.

Remember to send me any solar drawings, SID flares or photos for me to include here.

The events listed above meet at least one of the following criteria

  1. Event reported by two or more observers within +/- 5 minutes
  2. Event matched to GOES-8 XRA event to within +/- 15 minutes and event time < 1000 UT
  3. Reported by observer with a high quality rating > 8 (scale 1-10)

Solar Events

August was an exceptionally slow month again for SID activity. There were only 3 correlated SID events reported by observers. Even the GOES Spacecraft did not see much action recording only 17 X-Ray flare events. All of these in fact were only B and C class events.

One of our observers Jon Wallace (A97) had the pleasure of visiting one of the most powerful VLF stations that are used in the SID program (NAA in Cutler, Maine) here is a picture that gives an idea of the size of one of these transmitting stations.
