Solar Events

August turned out to be a very active month. Many observers who sent in data remarked to me how many SID events they had detected. Indeed there were so many events that I had to change the format of the report somewhat to accomadate the event listings.

There were 323 X-Ray flares reported by the GOES-8 Satellite. Of these, 22 of them were powerful M Class flares and one, on the 25th, was rated as an X5.3 class event. The activity clustered about the 5th of the month and the 24th. Our observers recorded a record 130 events, the largest event list that I have ever seen. Most of the events recorded were also centered about the 5th and 24th of the month with a couple of unusually quiet days on the 10th and 11th of the month.
