sunspot

Gema Araujo took this H-alpha image on February 5, 2007 at 12:40 UT of active region 10940.

February continues with minimal solar activity. Our radio SID observers got blanked this month as well. Fortunately our sunspot observers faired slightly better, with most days showing some activity except for mid month.

We must commend all our observers for continually monitoring for any activity during this quiet part of the cycle. Reports, even with zero counts are just as important during this time, as all reports during the active part of the cycle. I look back into my old log books from several cycles ago and see the numerous reports of zero or minimal spot activity. It sure made for quick peeks at the sun, and took little if any time for drawings. Remember these easy times before we're once again peppered with spots at solar max.

Solar Events

February, as has often been the case lately, was very slow for X-Ray flares and therefore SID event detection. In fact I did not get one report with a correlated event. That is most unusual. I guess it can't get any slower than this so that it folks; It's all uphill from here. Thanks to all of you for having such patience waiting for this slow season to pass. A lot of you did report in this month. Fourteen in fact and I do appreciate all the reports. (Not to mention it's good to hear from you as well.) The X-Ray flares recorded by the GOES-12 spacecraft was pretty sparse as well. Only 10 and most of these were low B-Class flares. That is so quiet . . .

Note that as I did before when there were predominantly reports of "No SIDS", I have listed all the observers who reported in here and in the database file recorded on the web site. This is contrary to what I usually do which is only list observers that had correlated events. (I always record every observer in my database regardless of the nature of the report, however.)
