SolarSolar

There were a few sunspots again this month, and the Ra number doubled, but still very low. Gema Araujo of Spain obtained these wonderful recent solar images. The left H-alpha image taken of AR1010 on Jan 10, 2009 at 10:58UT, and the right prominence image taken the next day on Jan 11, 2009 at 11:25UT

Thanks again to all the dedicated observers who continue to patrol the sun and submit reports. Your data still counts and reflects the current status of this cycle. Don't forget to submit your images, drawings and SID plots to include in the bulletin.

Still looking for web software volunteers

We're looking to update our sunspot data submission process, and provide more real-time feedback to all our solar observers via the AAVSO website. We'd also like to help improve our visibility to the astronomy community for IYA 2009. If you have the experience and expertise and have some time to help the solar group, please contact me via email above.

The events listed above meet at least one of the following criteria

  1. Event reported by two or more observers within +/- 5 minutes
  2. Event matched to GOES-8 XRA event to within +/- 15 minutes and event time < 1000 UT
  3. Reported by observer with a high quality rating > 8 (scale 1-10)

Solar Events

January was a very slow month again. There were 0 correlated SID events and the GOES-12 satellite only detected 3 flares around the 10th of the month. I'd like to welcome new observer Frank Adamson. Frank lives in Australia and is monitoring NWC. His observer ID is A122. Welcome to the group Frank. As always thanks to all of you for your continued contributions. It is slow but with the lull in activity we are getting new observers. That's good to see. I hope you all have a good year ahead and hopefully by the end of the year the solar activity will have started to pick up on a regular basis.
