Solar
Tilting Sun by Les Cowley

Les Cowley created this useful program called Tilting Sun. Enter you location and time and it creates an image of the sun taking into account P, Lo, Bo for either Alt-Az or Equatorial mounted scopes. I found it so convenient that his default location is set to Toronto. Thanks Les. You can grab the program at www.atoptics.co.uk

Don't forget to submit your images, drawings and SID plots to include in the bulletin.

  3. Reported by observer with a high quality rating > 8 (scale 1-10)

Solar Events

I think the chart below, or lack thereof, speaks for itself. June was a month with not even one X-Ray flare detected by the GOES satellite. There were no correlated SID events detected for the month as would be expected. There is certainly talk now that something odd is up with the sun given the long duration of the absolute minimum conditions we have been experiencing. I have read one article by a solar scientist, however, that purports that given the range of minimums experienced over the years this is a longer than usual minimum but not out of the range or normal - at least not yet. Our observations certainly tell the story and will continue to do so. The longer it goes the closer we will be to an abnormal solar minimum. But for now we should not get too concerned and hopefully in the coming months, there will be some activity worth monitoring.
