November 2008

While solar activity remains very low, there are still some occasional spurts of activity. Mike Hill reports that two European SID observers recorded a C-class flare on November 3. It's the first flare we've listed in many months. Gema Araujo of Spain obtained these recent solar images. The left image in Calcium-K on November 13 at 11:21UT, and solar prominences in H-alpha on November 15, 11:57UT

Thanks again to all the dedicated observers who continue to patrol the sun and submit reports. Your data still counts and reflects the current status of this cycle. Don't forget to submit your images, drawings and SID plots to include in the bulletin.

Mike, Dan and I along with all the AAVSO staff would like to wish all our observers a happy and safe holiday and best wishes for a fantastic 2009.

  1. Event reported by two or more observers within +/- 5 minutes
  2. Event matched to GOES-8 XRA event to within +/- 15 minutes and event time < 1000 UT
  3. Reported by observer with a high quality rating > 8 (scale 1-10)

Solar Events

November brought us our first SID event in months. There was 1 correlated SID event recorded by two observers. Lionel Loudet (A118) and Jean Pierre Godet (A119) . Congratulations to both and let us celebrate the start of cycle 24 for sure. There were 12 X-Ray flares recorded by the GOES-12 spacecraft. Two of them were C-Class and the rest were B-Class. A change of pace for them as well.

As usual all of your contributions are appreciated. As you can see I have a slightly new format for the GOES-12 chart. I'm just getting used to a new version of MS Word and will need time to refine it's look. But for now its good just to need to get back into a mode where charts and graphs are relavent.
