Submitting Observations FAQ
Q: How do I send in an observation for a star not in your validation file?
A: Use 9999+99 or 0000+00 as its designation, and in the "Comment Codes
Explained" or "Remarks" field put sufficient information so the star
can be identified clearly. We update the validation file monthly so
be sure and check back to the AAVSO web site every now and then for a
new file.
Q: Can I still send monthly reports?
A: You can send us reports electronically as often as you wish,
including once a month. However, please do not send in the same
observation twice. If you send your observations on paper or by fax
and not electronically, send only one report and send it after the end
of the month.
Q: Do my observations still need to be sorted by designation?
A: Only if sent by paper or fax, not if sent electronically.
Q: Will my observations be considered for the News Flash (AAVSO's electronic publication)?
A: Certainly! In fact, this new method of submitting observations
makes it easier for the staff to access your observations for the News
Flash. Also, please put a "Y" in the comment code field if you feel
that your observation deserves special attention (outburst, fading,
etc.).
Q: Can I still use KSOLO/KSOLOREP (AAVSO's data-entry and formatting software for DOS)?
A: Yes, but please include comp star and chart info if you can. Also,
only send us the SUM file generated by KSOLOREP and put it in the body
of the e-mail and not as an attachment. We also highly recommend
that you upgrade to PCObs, which is an updated and easier form of
KSOLO and KSOLOREP combined into one program that runs under Windows.
Q: How do I make corrections to an observation already sent in?
A: E-mail the corrected observation to aavso@aavso.org and tell us
what observation you would like us to replace with the new one.
Q: What happens to my observation after I have sent it in?
A: We made a whole web page for this answer: What Happens to an Observation After I Send it in?
