All,

I received the message below from Matt Woods, a volunteer at
the Perth Observatory in Western Australia. He gave me
permission to forward it to the group with the hope that one
or more of you can lend some advice.

His email is: matthewlwwoods@gmail.com

Please contact him directly.

Thanks!

At the end of last year we got some bad news that the remaining
full time staff at the observatory were going to be made redundant
due to a decision by the department in the WA government that
currently look after it.

Thankfully due to a large amount of pressure from the premier
and the government of the state to keep the Observatory open,
the department has decided to look for someone to manage or
lease the observatory.

As our group has intimate knowledge of the Observatory, and
has volunteers with a wide range of skills they have come to
us offering to lease the observatory to us or for us to manage
the Observatory.

I'm part of sub committee that is negotiating with the department
and we've been tasked with coming up with a model on how we will
run the observatory whether by just managing the Observatory for
the department or leasing it from them.

I was wondering if you have a list of observatories which are
run fully or partially by volunteers (with the help of
government/corporate) so we can contact them and discuss how
they run their observatories so we get a range of options that
we can potentially use?

We've been told by the department that they are willing to help
us over the next few years, which is good.

If you any advice as well that would be much appreciated.

Observatory request

Hi: In Australia it must be hot.  I know of an observatory called the Northeast Astronomy Kingdom Foundation This was formed to fund the Peacham Observatory in Vermont. U.S.A.  I think that they may be able to help..

I am not familiar with Austraila's rules.  But, They have a website and the Person in charge is avaliable through the website. Hope this helps. HNL--Anna

Three words: David Dunlap Observatory!

I've passed along this message to people I know who are deeply involved but the Toronto RASC's leadership in maintaining and expanding outreach with the 74-inch telescope are without parallel!!!
