Hello everyone,
it's been a quiet month as far as AAVSO HEN goes, but there's a
potentially interesting new source that might be within reach of
some of you.
E. Berger and A. Soderberg announced the detection of an X-ray
flash from NGC 2770 during follow-up observations of SN 2007uy
that is apparently *not* associated with that supernova.
Subsequent optical imaging of the XRF position by several observers
have detected an optical counterpart which may still be brightening.
It is possible this is a *second* supernova within the same galaxy
occurring at the same time.
The source position is on the outskirts of NGC 2770 -- it is within the
galaxian light, but well outside the inner region of the galaxy.
J2000 position is RA: 09 09 30.7 , Dec: +33 08 19
Swift UVOT observations (Kong, et al. GCN 7164) measured the
object at V ~ 18.4, B ~ 18.8 and rising at 2008 Jan 11 02:45 UT
(JD 2454476.6146).
Observations are encouraged.
Clear skies,
Matt
