The question is really: how much effort should I put into obtaining
estimates of magnitudes and colors before submitting my data? Some
observers will have the experience necessary to judge whether one
catalog or another is more reliable, or the method necessary to
transform from one bandpass to another. However, the bottom line
is that the AAVSO or the researcher will eventually have to
readjust the photometry, as long as the comp star magnitudes are
just estimates. So I'm happy if they are in the right ballpark
and not 10 magnitudes off. Whatever the observer wants to provide
is ok, as long as they tell us what they did.
