In the process, I implemented "highest absolute deviant" combination[1]. 
There is [presently] no "normalization" as Michael mentioned, so this 
probably won't work well at all for data images. I built a windows 
executable [2] also for your amusement.

I've been using your implementation of Wolfgang's idea for the 'most 
deviant'.  Very good, and what an improvement!!!  I revised that old 
webpage <http://ben.davies.net/cosmicrays1.htm> and gave a description 
of how to use the command line exe.  I know you guys did a lot of work 
getting the program going and I am extremely appreciative of all the 
effort - even though I know you were the ones having all the fun. <g>.

Being able to 'see' better now, I modified a bit the median subtract.  
Instead of one median of the full image set, I began to use a 3 image 
moving median.  That brought out even more detail in the cosmic rays, 
but probably is not  an improvement if you are looking for asteroids.
