Testing a camera for linearity is something that everyone should do, when  
the get a camera.  I have seen that the linearity can be affected not only  by 
the chip, but the camera electronics.  So just because the chip is  linear, 
don't assume that the camera is the same.
 
Unfortunately, when considering a purchase, you do not always have the  
option.  That is where this forum can be very helpful.
