Hello Jim,

I think variable star work is great. Like anything worthwhile it 
takes effort to learn.  One of the best ways is to jump in and try. 
Experiment. Research. Ask questions. I have also found that it helps 
to pick a particular star or a few and concentrate on them. You may 
end up being the only person in the world constantly monitoring that 
star. Even stars that are well observed are sometimes great stars to 
learn on. That way you will learn faster and see progress.
