I don't use Excel, but OpenOffice Calc is very similar.  In that case, I 
have to ask it to open a csv file.  Is there a filter?  Ie, when you ask 
Excel to open a file, is there a drop down list of file types?  It might 
be listed as text(csv) or somesuch.
