All,
The annual Symposium on Telescope Science presented by the Society for
Astronomical Sciences will be held at Big Bear, CA, on May 20-22. This
is the weekend before the large and very popular RTMC Astronomy Expo,
held only a few miles up the road from Big Bear.
The Symposium features talks by amateurs and professional involved in
astronomical research, covering a wide variety of topics. This year
we have presentations on double stars, variable stars, spectroscopy,
exoplanets, and solar observing, among others.
Tuesday, May 20, is reserved for two workshops. This year, Doug George
will give a hands-on workshop for MaximDL and Bob Denny will do the
same for his ACP Observatory control program. There is a separate fee
for the workshops.
Early registration for the workshops and is now open. You can get more
information and the registration packet by visiting the SAS web site at
http://www.socastrosci.org/
The Symposium is held at the Northwoods Resort in Big Bear, which offers
a discount rate for those attending SAS. SAS web site has a link to the
resort's web site. However, it is better to call the resort on their
toll-free number (for North America) to make reservations, making sure
to mention that you are attending the Symposium. The on-line reservation
system may not know about the discount rate.
This is a great opportunity to meet with those doing research, to learn
about new fields and new techniques, and just spend time in the mountains.
If you have any questions, please feel free to send an email to
program at SocAstrSci.org
We hope to see you in Big Bear next month.
Clear Skies,
Brian D. Warner
