You might also like Gerry A. Good's book "Observing Variable Stars" 
(Springer-Verlag, London, 2003 - part of Patrick Moore's Practical Astronomy 
series).  The book is organized around the table Jim referenced below, and 
supplements it with illustrations and quite a bit more detail.  I've found 
it to be an extremely useful guide to the variable star menagerie.
