I echo Rich's comments in that I give the totals a glance, but they
really aren't a motivator for me; good thing because they're small! My
motivators are observing campaigns, reading about new discoveries that
my observations may have contributed to, and downloading light curves to
see what's happening to particular stars. I also enjoy learning and
refining new techniques.

I would keep the same award levels for those observers (such as myself) that are not as efficent or automated as the high-end performers. Observing is a personal effort on my part. I am consistently comparing my present performance to my past performance. When the observer total come out then I do a quick comparison as to where I stand with others, but it does not alter my feeling at all about my effort. I don't begrudge the high end performers their totals. If they made the sacrifice or effort to do what is necessary to get those totals then they should receive the recognition.
