In ATEL 1604, the Catalina/Palomar surveys report a new
transient:
CSS080623:142206+334546 14:22:05.77 +33:45:46.1
which has risen from mag 18.6 on June 25 to 18.15 on July 2.
In ATEL 1606, a Lick Observatory spectrum yielded a very
blue, featureless continuum. with no obvious Balmer lines.
While they suggest that it might be a very young Type II
supernova, it could also be a galactic source. With no
hydrogen lines, it is unlikely to be a nova or CV. No
nearby galaxy is present.
Since this is nicely positioned in the early evening sky for
northern hemisphere observers, I'd suggest monitoring it for
a week or so and see how much brighter it gets. I don't
think it deserves a Special Notice (and is pretty faint for
most observers, but take that as a challenge), but certainly is an
interesting object. I won't be able to obtain SRO calibration
of the field anytime soon (Arizona monsoon). I'd use
the star about 3 arcmin due north of the target as your
comparison star, just so that everyone is on the same
system. (Note: ROTSE1 J142208.40+335321.3 is just about
7 arcmin north of this transient, and is a nice RRc variable.
You might be able to monitor both objects simultaneously).
