Hello everyone,
First, thanks to the observers to imaged the field of the OT reported by
Pi of the Sky on July 19. The source of the optical flash remains
mysterious, but the current hypothesis put forward by Taichi Kato that it
is a flare from a previously undiscovered flare star is a strong
possibility.
Both Taichi Kato and Brian Skiff discussed the possibility that this *may*
be associated with a 2MASS / USNO source:
USNO-A2.0 1050-00559791 (B=18.2, R=15.6)
2MASS 02020653+2006560 (J=12.08, H=11.50, K=11.23)
However, that identification has not been proven. For that reason, we
continue to assume the source has not been identified.
I have added the object "OT 020207+200715" to our validation table, and it
has been assigned the AUID 000-BFT-537. If you have obtained data for the
2MASS/USNO source, please submit photometry using that identification.
For clarity, please use the comments field to clearly indicate which
source you are measuring -- there are at least five point sources within 1
arcminute of the 2MASS position, so please specify in the comments field
whether your photometry is for the object above or something else within
the field. Please note that the USNO star has a proper motion on the
order of 0.1"/year, and so your astrometry will not match the coordinates
exactly.
It is very difficult to say what Pi Of The Sky recorded on 2008 July 19,
and so we can't recommend a course of action other than to occasionally
monitor the field for more activity. If the 2MASS object is a flare star,
it is possible it may show either rotational variation due to spots, or it
may show additional flares.
Clear skies,
Matthew
