Today is the start of the IYA 2009 Project. See:
http://www.aavso.org/aavso/iya.shtml
The AAVSO is making the coming eclipse of epsilon Aurigae a major project.
As some of you may know Dr. Robert Stencel (U of Denver) and I have
written a book on Epsilon Aurigae. This is a 287 page soft cover book
covering history, last Campaign, current efforts and various
observational techniques.
See: http://www.hposoft.com/EAur09/Book.html
To kick off the project we are offering a reduced price to AAVSO
members from now until 1 April 2009. Normally the price is $29.95 +
S&H, but for a limited time by mentioning the AAVSO you can get it
for $19.95 + S&H.
A side from general interest the book provides a guide for projects
involving epsilon Aurigae. While the 2 year eclipse does not start
until mid-summer of this year, the star may be doing some interesting
things as first contact approaches. Photometric and spectroscopic
observations are encouraged now until the end of this season, late
April. Currently the star system is well placed in the evening sky
for northern hemisphere observers. This also an excellent time to
refine techniques.
If anyone has any questions or comments, please contact me. This year
will be a most interesting one.
Clear skies.
