Hi Mark
Thanks for your Spectrum Lab "settings.ini" file.
It may help me get started recording SID data
with this powerful program!
Here are some comments/questions mostly based on
some foggy recollections of signal processing 101:
1. I notice that you are using an 8192 real FFT with
an a/d sampling rate of 96khz. I think that gives
a bin separation of 11.7 Hz. This may not be a "matched filter"
for analyzing the NAA 24khz signal because NAA has some
bandwidth. NAA seems to be spread over about
200 Hz when I look at the signal on SpecLab
with the 8192 FFT. So I suggest using a 512 real FFT
that has a bin separation of 96000/512=187 Hz.
I think you can do this by changing your "ini" file from
"NrOfSamples=8192"
to
"NrOfSamples=512"
Your data should get significantly smoother.
Note that Hanning widens the effective bin
width more than 187 Hz and it also suppresses
pickup from signals at other frequencies. So
it is probably good to use Hanning.
2. I note on the FFT options screen, there is a
parameter for internal FFT averaging, and that
you are using 0 averaging. If you are only
saving the data every second, then more
time averaging might give you some useful
noise smoothing. My guess is that each
FFT takes 512/96000= 0.00533 sec, so a one
second averaging would cover 187.5 FFTs.
I think you can do this by changing your "ini" file
"Average=0"
to
"Average=187"
This should also give more data smoothing.
Note that due to Hanning, the think FFTs should
be overlapped by 50% to avoid minimize data
loss, but I am not sure how to do this in
SpecLab. With overlapping, 1 sec = 375 FFTs.
3. How do you plot your logged SID data
from SpecLab? What do your plots look
like?
4. I have an old Audigy 2 (D400) sound card, but I have
never gotten it to work right with SpecLab. When
I set it to 96khz and 24 bits, and display
0-48khz, I see a lowpass filter rolloff at 24khz, and
when I inject cw tones into line input with a signal
generator I get some phantom signals
when my cw tones are above 24khz. I
am not sure whether this is a problem with
my Win98se Audigy drivers or whether I need a
newer Audigy 2 ZS card. Are you using
Win XP and do you see any of these problems?
Which Audigy sound card do you have?
