THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF VARIABLE STAR OBSERVERS 25 Birch Street, Cambridge, MA 02138 USA BITNET: aavso@cfa8 SPAN: nssdca::cfa8::aavso Tel. 617-354-0484 FAX 617-354-0665 AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 144 (May 6, 1991) SUPERNOVA IN NGC 4902 Robert McNaught, Anglo-Australian Telescope, informs us of the discovery of a supernova in NGC 4902 by AAVSO member Robert O. Evans, Hazelbrook, Australia. The discovery was made on May 5.49 UT at visual magnitude 13.5-14. The supernova is offset from the nucleus of the galaxy 13.9" east, 10.7" north. The position of the supernova (1950.0, from R. McNaught) is: RA 12h 58m 22.55s Decl. -14deg 14' 29.8" According to McNaught, "The supernova ... is situated just on the edge of the bar and inside the ring" of the galaxy. Please use the accompanying AAVSO preliminary "d" scale chart of SV Vir and the Thompson/Bryan chart of NGC 4856 for sequences for observing the supernova, and report your observations to AAVSO HQ so we may forward them to the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams. Our congratulations to Bob on his latest discovery! MONITORING OF 1910-33 RY SAGITIARII Observers are reminded of the upcoming observing run with the IUE on R Y Sgr (see AAVSO Alert Notice 138). This R Coronae Borealis star is gradually returning to maximum light after its recent minimum. Please monitor R Y Sgr throughout the month of May, particularly on May 22 and 31, when the IUE observations will be made, and please telephone your estimates in on May 20 and May 29, so we may inform the astronomers. The AAVSO HQ answering machine (617-354-0484) is on nights and weekends. Thank you very much for your efforts and astronomical contributions. Clear Skies! Good Observing! Janet A. Mattei Director
