				AAVSO ALERT NOTICE 160 (JULY 10,1992)
				
1817-18 NOVA SAGITTARII 1992 #2

We have been informed by William (Bill) Liller, Vina del Mar, Chile, and the Central 
Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams of the photographic discovery by Bill Liller of a 
nova in Sagittarius. The nova was discovered, using the PROBLICOM method, on TP film 
with orange fIlter and 85 mm lens on 1992 July 9.157 UT at magnitude 8.5, from the 
average of two photos. The object was < 12.0 on July 6.03 UT.

The 1950 position of the object is

			RA = 18h 20m 18s     Dec. = -20deg 23.7'

Nova Sgr 92#2 has been confirmed spectroscopically by astronomers at the European 
Southern Observatory as a nova near maximum light.

The following observations are provided by our observers: July 10.19 UT, 7.8 (P. Sventek, 
Houston, TX); 10.20, 8.0 (M. Adams, Melbourne, FL); 10.23, 8.2 (C. Scovil, Stamford, CT).

Please observe the nova using the accompanying finder chart of the field from the AAVSO 
Variable Star Atlas and the AAVSO preliminary "b" chart of nearby V1017 Sgr. The 
answering machine (617-354-0484) at Headquarters is on nights and weekends.

MINOR OUTBURST OF 0324+43 GK PERSEI (NOVA PERSEI 1901)

The minor outburst of GK Per continues. The following recent observations have been

SUPERNOVA IN NGC 4111B

Bill Liller informs us that a pre-discovery photograph of SN NGC 4111B (see AAVSO Alert 
Notices 158 and 159), taken with TP film and minus-UV filter on 1992 June 29.98 UT, shows 
the supernova at magnitude 14. The comparison star sequences (V) used were those on 
charts for NGC 4374 and NGC 4438 (Supernova Search Charts and Handbook, G. D. Thompson 
and J. T. Bryan, Jr., Cambridge University Press).

			CORRECTION to M VSO ALERT NOTICE 160 (JULY 14, 1992)

In AAVSO Alert Notice 160 (July 10, 1992), an error was made in the 1900 designation and 
the 1950 position of Nova Sagittarii 1992 #2. However, the nova was plotted correctly 
on the chart from the AA VSO Variable Star Atlas.

The correct 1950 position of Nova Sgr 92#2 is:

	R.A. = 18h 20m 18s	Decl. = -28deg 23.7'

The correct 1900 designation is therefore 1817-28.

The charts distributed with Alert Notice 160 are reproduced here for your reference. 
Please report your observations of N Sgr 92#2 to Headquarters; the answering machine 
(617-354-0484) is on nights and weekends.
